The nominees for the MTV Movie Awards were announced yesterday, and "Guardians of the Galaxy", "The Fault in Our Stars", and "Neighbors" lead the pack with seven nominations each. This is far from the Oscars, so it isn't surprising that "Birdman" wasn't even nominated for Movie of the Year, and Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore didn't score nominations for Best Actor and Actress. But some Oscar favorites DID get some love. "Selma", "Whiplash", "Boyhood", and "American Sniper" are up for Movie of the Year, along with "Guardians of the Galaxy", "The Fault in Our Stars", "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1", and "Gone Girl".
Like the Oscars, no minorities were nominated in the top acting categories . . . although MTV came through by nominating "Selma" star David Oyelowo for Best Breakthrough Performance, while Chris Rock ("Top Five") and Kevin Hart ("The Wedding Ringer") were nominated for Best Comedic Performance. Zoe Saldana was also nominated for Best On-Screen Transformation for her "Guardians of the Galaxy" role . . . but the category seems tailor-made for Ellar Coltrane, who ACTUALLY aged 12 years in "Boyhood". Other highlights include Kate Upton being nominated for Best Shirtless Performance for "The Other Woman".
She's up against four dudes . . . Zac Efron ("Neighbors"), Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy"), Channing Tatum ("Foxcatcher"), and Ansel Elgort ("The Fault in Our Stars"). Also, Seth Rogen and James Franco are nominated for Best Duo and Best Kiss for North Korea's least-favorite movie, "The Interview". Online voting is open now . . . and runs up through April 11th. You'll need to create an account with MTV to vote, or sign in through Facebook. MTV will air the ceremony live on April 12th. Comedienne Amy Schumer is hosting. You can find a list of all the nominees at MTV.com.
