The "Saturday Night Live" 40th anniversary special ran THREE AND A HALF FREAKIN' HOURS. But it was a lot of fun. They mixed old clips with NEW versions of classic "SNL" sketches. And pretty much everybody who's still alive was there.
Here's a video roundup . . .
- JIMMY FALLON and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE started the show by rapping the history of "SNL". (WARNING!!! This clip contains some questionable language.)
- STEVE MARTIN's monologue was crashed multiple times, by Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy, Peyton Manning, and Miley Cyrus, among others.
- In a new version of the "Californians" sketch, BRADLEY COOPER made out with BETTY WHITE. TAYLOR SWIFT was in that sketch, too, and she ate her hair.
- BILL MURRAY brought back his cheesy lounge singer character, to sing "The Love Theme from Jaws". clip.
- Including Emma Stone as the late Gilda Radner's Roseanne Roseannadanna, and Melissa McCarthy as Chris Farley's Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker. (Here's the whole scene.)
- CHRIS ROCK paid tribute to EDDIE MURPHY, who returned to the show for the first time since he left 30 years ago. But it was totally anticlimactic . . . he just came on stage to say thanks and get some applause. He didn't do any comedy, and didn't appear in any skits.
- ANDY SAMBERG and ADAM SANDLER did a music video about breaking character. Not surprisingly, they really called out Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz.
- Zach Galifianakis introduced the video wearing a Sia wig . . . because Sia had just performed with KANYE WEST. (You can see that by scrolling down here.)
- Kanye appeared later in a "Wayne's World" sketch, where Mike Myers and Dana Carvey teased him by saying Beck was a better musical guest than Beyoncé. But Kanye was in on the joke. (Check it out here. It happens at 3:09.)
- Sandler also brought back Opera Man. It was part of a larger tribute to "SNL's" musical characters, which featured the return of the Blues Brothers . . . Dan Aykroyd and JIM Belushi. (Just an observation: There's really not a chubby one and a skinny one anymore.)
- WILL FERRELL got his Trebek on with a new edition of "Celebrity Jeopardy!". It included a great cameo by Jim Carrey as Matthew McConaughey. And Alec Baldwin did a really good Tony Bennett. (On the red carpet before the show, Carrey took a shot at Brian Williams.)
- BILL MURRAY introduced an "in memoriam" segment.
